A Note From Your President........

Welcome Alumni! It is my pleasure to be able to welcome you as alumni of WSCC in my current role as the President of the Alumni Association.

I want to encourage you to be an active member of this association as it is a grand opportunity to give back and help the future alumni of WSCC. The Alumni Association conducts many activities throughout the year to raise money for scholarships, like our now famous Little Black Dress Event each February. Last year this one event raised about $21,000.00 for scholarships. This is one of several such events. We provide many other activities to help students prepare for, and be successful during, college, such as the ACT workshops, Nursing Alumni Connection, Alumni Trips, and Faculty/Freshman luncheon, just to name a few.

There are many more events planned for this coming year, so please take a look at the upcoming events listing and start making your plans on how you can be a current and active member of the Alumni Association! There’s fun to be had and help to be given, so don’t miss out!

Sincerely,
Mary Hovater
President, WSCC Alumni Association

Leah Patterson-Lust- Overall Outstanding Alumni 2011

Leah Patterson Lust is a 1992 graduate of Wallace State with an associate degree in history. She continued her education at the University of Alabama, graduating Magna Cum Laude and first in her Class, with a degree in Social Work in 1992, and received her Masters degree in social work in 1995. She is a licensed social worker and the Director of Social Work at Cullman Regional Medical Center until 2006, when she was elected to the position of Cullman County Probate Judge, where she served through 2012. Leah contributes her time to several professional and community organizations, including Alabama Probate Judges Association, National Association of Social Workers, Pilot Club, and the State of Alabama Independent Living Council, to name a few.

At the age of 17, Leah was involved in a car accident, suffering a severe spinal cord injury, that required the use of a wheelchair for mobility. She spent almost four months in the hospital, before being discharged in time to begin her senior year of high school. As a graduate of West Point High School, my parents encouraged me to attend Wallace State to begin my college education. During this time Leah found the college professors to be both knowledgeable and caring, and the support staff to be extremely helpful. She was able to gain the physical strength she needed to complete her degree and live independently at the University of Alabama. Leah states, “Graduating from WSCC prepared me for academic excellence at the University in both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees program. I am so thankful for all of the opportunities that WSCC provided, and honored to be nominated as an outstanding alumnus.”
